Thelma Irene (Hanks) Shelton

Mrs. Thelma Irene Hanks Shelton, age 91 of Mount Airy passed away on Saturday, September 3, 2022, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson.  Mrs. Shelton was born on June 13, 1931, in Surry County to the late Elmer Raymond and Lottie Berthena Parker Hanks.  Thelma was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend.  She was a long-time member of Calvary Baptist Church and will be deeply missed by all that knew her.  Surviving is her husband Howard Lee Shelton; two daughters and son-in-law, Janet Shelton McPherson and husband Bob; Jill Shelton; one son and daughter-in-law, Gray Lee Shelton and wife Mary Jane; three grandchildren, Laura Shelton Shores and husband Timothy, Amanda Shelton Brooks and husband Brandon, Julie McPherson Gurley and husband Brad; eight great-grandchildren, Gray Daniel Shores, Evan Michael Shores, Anna Kate Shores, Wesley Mitchell Brooks, Brayden McKay Brooks, Samuel Howard Gurley, Victoria Lynn Gurley, Russell Robert Gurley; a sister-in-law, Julia Ann Shelton; along with several nieces and nephews.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. Shelton was preceded in death by her brother, J. W. Wall.  A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 6, 2022, at 2:00 PM at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Alex Martin officiating.  Burial will follow at Skyline Memorial Gardens.  The family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 6, 2022, from 12:30 PM until 2:00 PM at Calvary Baptist Church.  Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 314 South Franklin Road, Mount Airy, North Carolina 27030 or to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 1427 Edgewood Drive, Suite 101, Mount Airy, North Carolina 27030.  Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
