Mr. Thomas Edward Brown, age 90, a well-known farmer in the Westfield Community passed away at his home Thursday, August 20, 2015. Born on February 1, 1925, Mr. Brown was a Veteran of World War II and served in Europe. Until the decline of his health, Mr. Brown was a active member of Westfield Baptist Church where he had served as a Deacon and on numerous committees. He served on the Surry County Soil and Conservation Committee for 45 years. Mr. Brown was also a member of the original Board of Education when East Surry High School opened. He is survived by his beloved wife Betty Shackelford Brown of 67 years; two daughters: Peggy Best of Ararat, VA and Judy Flake of Pilot Mountain. In addition Mr. Brown has two grandsons: Joshua Best, wife Diana and Roger Whiston; one granddaughter Elizabeth Flake; four great-grandsons and one great granddaughter; one brother, Wayne and wife Libby Brown of Chatham, VA; three sisters: Virginia Quillen of Blacksburg, VA; Irene McCann of Salisbury; Ilene and husband Marvin East of Ridgeway, VA; two brothers-in-law John Shackelford of Mount Airy, Tom Glass of Asheboro and one sister-in-law, Jo Anne Shackelford Shelton of Winston-Salem as well as many wonderful nieces, nephews and friends. Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his parents: W. H. (Hub) Brown and Elizabeth S. Brown; two brothers, Will Brown and John Brown; three sisters-in-law, Betty Mae Brown, Martha Brown, and Frances Shackelford Glass; two brothers-in-law, Joe McCann and Max Quillen. Family will receive friends at Moody Funeral Home Friday night between 6:00 and 8:00 and at other times at the home at 907 Cleo Cain Road, Pilot Mountain, NC. A celebration of life will be held at Westfield Baptist Church at 2:00 PM, Saturday, August 22, 2015 with Dr. Joel Stephens officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with full military honors by VFW Memorial Honor Guard, Pilot Mountain Post 9436 and Mt. Airy Post 2019. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice & Palliative Care at 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the nurses and staff of Mountain Valley Hospice for their care and support.
