Mr. Thomas Garnet Fawcett, Jr., 81, of Mount Airy, passed away Friday, April 22, 2011, at Golden Living Center in Mount Airy. He was born July 21, 1929, in Mount Airy, to Thomas Garnet Fawcett, Sr. and Katie Lee Mills Fawcett. Garnet graduated from Mount Airy High School, attended Davidson College, and graduated from Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk. He served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953, being stationed at Fort McPherson in Atlanta, GA, and Fort Jackson in Columbia, SC. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church. The Fawcett family was instrumental in helping establish the Episcopal church in Mount Airy with construction of the church being started in March, 1886. Garnet was a retired banker with 57 years of service. He was a third generation of Mount Airy bankers that began with his grandfather, Thomas Fawcett, who organized the First National Bank of Mount Airy in 1893. Garnet is survived by two sons, Thomas Garnet Fawcett, III and his wife, Elaine, of Aurora, OR, and George Lenfesty Fawcett of Mount Airy; two granddaughters, Lila Fawcett and Raina Lee Fawcett of Aurora, OR; his twin brother, George D'Espard Fawcett and his wife, Shirley, of Lincolnton; a sister, Elizabeth Fawcett Burke of Mount Airy; a brother-in-law, Dozy Caldwell and his wife, Susan, of Evans, GA; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Fawcett was preceded in death by his wife, Roberta "Dink" Caldwell Fawcett; three sisters, Mary Mills Fawcett Folger (Fred, Sr.), Katherine Fawcett Folger (Henry), and Evelyn Fawcett Randolph (Bob). A graveside service and burial will be at 2:00 PM Monday, April 25, 2011, in Oakdale Cemetery. The Rev. Dennis W. "Bud" Cameron will be the officiating minister. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030 or The Mount Airy Museum of Regional History, 301 North Main Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030. Bud and Len wish to express their deep appreciation and sincere thanks to the staffs of Golden Living Center, Twelve Oaks, and Mountain Valley Hospice for the loving care provided to Garnet. Moody Funeral Services of Mount Airy is serving the Fawcett family.
