Mr. Thomas Jackson Greenwood, Sr., 81, of Mount Airy, passed away Monday night, November 10, 2014, at Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Community in Winston-Salem, after a period of declining health from Parkinson's disease. Mr. Greenwood was born February 6, 1933, in Surry County, one of four children born to the late Joseph Gordon and Martha Frances King Greenwood. Jack graduated from Mount Airy High School in 1951, and he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering construction option from North Carolina State University in 1956. After he graduated from college, he served two years in the United States Army. He owned and operated Blue Ridge Enterprises for more than 55 years. He semi-retired in 2003 and since that time enjoyed being in the company of his good friends. Mr. Greenwood was a lifelong member of Central United Methodist Church, where he taught the Bob Smith Sunday School Class for 33 years and attended services regularly as long as his health permitted. Among Greenwood's accomplishments were his service as president of the Salvation Army Board of Directors; president of the Surry Arts Council; chairman of the Administrative Board of Directors of Central United Methodist Church; chairman of the trustees of the Methodist Children's Home; and the Greater Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce's Citizen of the Year award in 1999. He also received the first lay leader of the year award from his church in 1999. In the community, Jack was a former member of the Jaycees; the Greater Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and served as the vice-president; the Kiwanis Club, serving as president; the United Fund Board of Directors; and a board member of the Clyde Dupin Ministries. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Joyce Hatcher Greenwood of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Tracy Greenwood of Mount Airy and Todd and Penny Greenwood of Winston-Salem; a foster son, Darren Martin of Miami, FL; four grandchildren, Caitlin Greenwood of Richmond, VA, Morgan Greenwood of Boone, Aaron Greenwood of Atlanta, GA, and Caroline Greenwood of Charlottesville, VA; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Estelle Greenwood Belton and Eleanor Greenwood Powell-Hines and Clarence Hines, all of Mount Airy; a sister-in-law, Sarah Hill Greenwood of Mount Airy; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Greenwood was preceded in death by a brother, Oscar Wayne Greenwood; and two brothers-in-law, Joe Pete Powell and Clarence Conway Belton. The funeral service will be held Friday, November 14, 2014, at 2:00 PM at Central United Methodist Church, with the Rev. James L. Pyatt and Dr. Julian M. Aldridge, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Central United Methodist Church, 1909 North Main Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or Centenary United Methodist Church, 646 West Fifth Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27101.
