Thomas Baity "Tom" York, 87, of White Plains, passed away Sunday, November 2, 2008. He was born July 6, 1921, in Surry County, to L.M. and Jettie Robertson York. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Marian Johnson York; his sons, Gary York and wife, Charlotte, and Jim York and wife, Tammy, all of Pilot Mountain; his daughter, Anne Fehring and husband, Dr. Tom Fehring, of Charlotte; and eight grandchildren, Alan York and wife, Kyle, and Garrison York, all of Winston-Salem, Taylor York, Johnson York, and Thomas York, all of Pilot Mountain, and Keith Fehring, Rachel Fehring, and Katherine Fehring, all of Charlotte. Tom is also survived by a brother, Jack York of White Plains and was preceded in death by his siblings, Beulah, Bob, and Russell York. Tom co-founded York Oil Company with his dad and brothers, and founded Hill-Top Transport. He was a partner with his son, Gary, in Yoco, Inc. and his son, Jim, in Petroleum Transport Company. He was a member of White Plains Friends Meeting, Renfro Masonic Lodge #691 AF and AM, White Plains Fire Department, and a charter member of the White Plains Ruritan Club, having perfect attendance for 48 consecutive years. Tom's real passion was little league baseball. He coached the White Plains Braves for 28 years, where he won 80% of his games. He helped organize the Dobson Little League, where he served as Commissioner for 10 years. He was inducted into the inaugural class of the Surry County Sports Hall of Fame in 2006. In 2007, the White Plains Ruritan Club named its athletic facility the Tom B. York Athletic Fields. He was devoted to his church, family, friends, community and county. His other interests included Atlanta Braves Baseball, golf, and NASCAR. He loved attending his grandchildren's ballgames and golf matches, and his presence will be sorely missed. The family wishes to thank his many caregivers and the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care. A celebration of Tom's life will be held Wednesday, November 5, at 11:00 AM at White Plains Friends Meeting, 849 Old Highway 601, Mount Airy, in the White Plains Community, with the service conducted by the Rev. Jake Penley, the Rev. Wayne Johnson, and Mr. Brent McKinney. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at White Plains Friends Meeting, and other times at 1143 Old Highway 601 in White Plains.
