Thurman Finch Horner

Mr. Thurman Finch Horner, age 93, of North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, passed away on December 26, 2021, at Autumn Care of Drexel. He was born on June 13, 1928, in Oxford, North Carolina, to Edward Clark and Dorothy Estelle Finch Horner. He served in the United States Marine Corps at the end of World War II. Upon completion of his military service, he attended and graduated from Appalachian State University with a Bachelor of Science and Masters in Biology. After graduation, he taught for a brief time in the Watauga County Public School System. He then worked for I. E. Dupont Corporation as an engineer in the textile-fibers division. He retired from Dupont after 36 years’ of service. He enjoyed shooting competitively, and in 1969 was awarded the first civilian Distinguished Expert award for the state of North Carolina He also was active in church in the various communities He also was very active in the Bill Glass Prison ministry and Samaritan’s Purse

He was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Dorothy Horner, brother Clark Horner, son-in-law Ray Mallory and son-in law Dr. David Sloan. Mr. Horner is survived by his wife of 72 years, Lillian Reeves Horner, daughter Cynthia Mallory, daughter Catherine Sloan, son Tom Horner, daughter-in-law Kelly Horner; grandchildren Ben Mallory and wife Katie, Rick Mallory and wife Amber, Tim Sloan and wife Cameron, Anna Westfall and husband David, Stephen Sloan and wife Hannah, Aaron Horner and Sophia Horner; great grandchildren Dean, Corbin, Samuel, Genevieve, Titus, Benjamin, and Gideon; brother James Horner and wife, Jane, and sister Eloise Crews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 31, 2021 at Moody Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Reverend Joe Hayes. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Garden with full military honors conducted by VFW Honor Guard, Mt. Airy Post 2019 and Pilot Mtn. Post 9436.
In Lieu of Flowers, contributions should be made to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association or Bill Glass Behind the Walls(Prison Ministry) ,or First Baptist Church of North Wilkesboro.
