Mr. Rufus Thomas “Tommy” Brickell, Jr., 75, of Mount Airy, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loved ones on Wednesday evening May 5, 2021. He was born on June 21, 1945 in Surry County to the late Rufus Thomas “RT” Brickell and Mable Alene Amburn Brickell. Tommy proudly served our country in the US Army and was a servant in his Pine Ridge community for many years as the Fire Chief of the fire department and the first responder unit. He is survived by his loving wife, Janice Southern Brickell, (married for 55 years and together for over 62); a daughter and son-in-law, Genene (Eddie Ray) Lovill; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Shawn (Stacey) Brickell, Eric (Sharon) Brickell, and Marshall (Tammy) Park; grandchildren, DeeAnn (David) Carson, Amber Brickell, Dustin (Kendra) Lovill, Macayla Brickell, William Brickell, Josie Brickell, Colton Lovill, Brycen Lovill, Sarah Park, Laura Park, Shelby Park, and Pacey and Colt; great-grandchildren, Kaleb Stull, Rylan Carson, Zayden Carson, Ally Lovill, and Landon Lovill; sister, Teresa (Denise) Brickell; brother, Teddy Ray (Judy) Brickell; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Jo Anne and Wayne Adkins, and Pam and Donnie Dunbar; special care givers, Amy Linville, Janene Moss, and Dale Williams; special friend, Jimmy Merrell; several nieces and nephews; special cousins Wayne and Burton East; and a host of other family and friends. In addition to his parents, Tommy was preceded in death by a sister, Bonita Hull; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, William A. and Geneva Southern. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 11, 2021 at 2:00 PM in the Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy with the Rev. Arlis Thomas and Rev. Tony Holder officiating. Burial will follow in the Brickell Family Cemetery with military honors by VFW Memorial Honor Guard, Pilot Mountain Post 9436 and Mt. Airy Post 2019. The family will receive friends on Monday from 1:00 – 5:00 PM at the funeral home. Mr. Brickell’s body will lie-in-state on Tuesday one hour prior to the service start at the funeral home.
