Tony Haynes

Mr. William Clifton “Tony” Haynes, 92, of Mount Airy, passed away Sunday night, June 25, 2017, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mr. Haynes was born April 26, 1925, in Surry County, one of six children born to the late John William and Laura Susan Flemming Haynes. Tony proudly served our country in the United States Army in 1943. He later retired as the knitting supervisor from Spencer’s Inc. after 28 years of service. Tony was an avid golfer with a record of thirteen holes in one. He earned multiple club championships, including seven consecutive championships at White Pines Country Club. Tony was honored for his baseball skills as a former member of the Blue Ridge Baseball Team and was inducted into the Greater Mount Airy Sports Hall of Fame. His family and friends truly considered him a sports enthusiast. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Treva Faye Sumner Haynes of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Richard Borovies of Bethlehem, PA; a granddaughter, Amanda Borovies of Bethlehem, PA; a brother, Oscar “Sock” Haynes of Mount Airy; and several nieces and nephews, Susan Balabuck, Bill Simmons, Brian Sumner, Chris Sumner, Eric Sumner, and Tiffany Sumner. In addition to his parents, Mr. Haynes was preceded in death by three sisters, Helen M. Haynes, Katherine Haynes, and Clara Simmons Brown; and a brother, John Vernon Haynes. The funeral service will be held Thursday, June 29, 2017, at 11:00 AM at Haymore Memorial Baptist Church, with the Rev. Robert McCrary officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Thursday from 10:00 until 11:00 AM at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Haymore Memorial Baptist Church Missions Fund, P.O. Box 27, Mount Airy, NC 27030. Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy is serving the family.
