TSgt. John Willis Pike, USAF Ret., 79, of 1598 Fancy Gap Road, Mount Airy, passed away Wednesday morning, April 10, 2013, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mr. Pike was born April 19, 1933, in Surry County, the son of the late Joseph Daniel and Ida Lou Williams Pike. John retired from the United States Air Force after 21 years of service. He loved rebuilding Classic Ford Mustangs and was known by his family and friends as "The Mustang Man." He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Joanna and Matthijs Van Den Bos of Holland; three grandsons, Micha Van Den Bos of Holland, and Justin Pike and Jakob, both of Lenoir; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Grady Pike and Wayne and Bridgette Pike, all of Mount Airy; and a longtime friend, Shirley Snow of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Pike was preceded in death by a son, Frederick John Pike; four sisters, Vannie Pike, Frances Pike, Mae Marshall, and Dorothy "Dot" Simmons; and four brothers, Warren Pike, Roger Pike, Robert Pike, and Stuart Pike. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 13, 2013, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy. Inurnment will follow at Midkiff Cemetery with full military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Saturday from 1:00 until 2:00 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC 27017.
