Valerie June Woodage Mayes

Mrs. Valerie June Woodage Mayes, 65, of Mount Airy, passed away Tuesday, May 15, 2007, at her home. Mrs. Mayes was born June 13, 1941, in Wooburn Green, England, to the late Albert James and Ellen Gillett Woodage. Valerie was a graduate of Slough College in Berkshire, England. She retired as a packaging manager from Renfro Corporation after 37 years of service. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Nathaniel "Buck" Mayes of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Dwight Cave of Mount Airy; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Emily Mayes of Dobson; two grandchildren, Jessica Mayes and Christian Mayes, both of Dobson; a great granddaughter, Valerie Layne McCreary of Mount Airy; and a brother, Vincent Woodage of Connecticut. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Mayes was preceded in death by a grandson, Josh McCreary. The funeral service will be held Friday, May 18, 2007, at 11:00 AM at Salem Baptist Church in Dobson. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Bobby Lewis, and burial will be in the Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at Salem Baptist Church. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030. The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Mridu Chand, Dr. Mohan Thakuri, and the staff of the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center for their kindness and love during Mrs. Mayes' illness.
