Mrs. Vecie Lavonna Fleming, 79, of Mount Airy, NC, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, March 19, 2022. She died at the William Childs Hospice House in Palm Bay, FL, after a battle with cancer. Lavonna was born July 1, 1942, in Ararat, VA, to the late Kelly and Bloomie Puckett Montgomery. She attended Blue Ridge School in Ararat, VA, and furthered her education later in life with an associate degree in business from Surry Community College. She married Joice Douglas “Doug” Fleming of Carroll County, VA, on August 1, 1958. They had three sons and moved in 1966, to Mount Airy, NC, to raise their family there. Lavonna had a long career with Hazel Keller Cosmetics, including management and some ownership in the company for a period of time. She was blessed with many customers and many sales awards. All who knew her well knew that reading was her favorite pastime. Doug and Lavonna were strong in their faith and active in many churches over their lifetime, including Pine Ridge Baptist, Blue Ridge Baptist, Imogene Baptist, and Temple Baptist churches. She most recently attended Field of Grace in Dobson, NC, and Graceway Church in Melbourne, FL, where she and Doug began spending their winters. Lavonna taught the youth in Sunday school, helped direct programs over the years, and loved to sing in the church choir. After Doug passed away in 2006, Lavonna continued to be a loved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is survived by her sons, Donald (Teresa) Fleming of Decatur, AL, Dwayne (Robin) Fleming of Wilmington, NC, and Wydell (Lynn) Fleming of Fuquay-Varina, NC; six granddaughters, Elizabeth (Cameron) Hufham, Abby (Caleb) Autry, Morgan Fleming, Rachel Burks, Whitney (Charlie) Soden, and Sarah (Landon) Ray; and two great-grandchildren, Kendall and Sutton Hufham. Lavonna had eight brothers and sisters. She is survived by three sisters, Macy Bowman, Vicie Anne Mulé, and Dianne Matthews; and three brothers, Ozzie, Dean, and Kenard Montgomery. She was preceded in death by her two sisters, Gracie Vipperman and Valtie Lawson. She was also “Aunt Von” to many beloved nephews and nieces. A service will be held in her memory at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, NC, on Saturday, March 26, 2022, at 11:00 AM. The family will receive friends Saturday from 10:00 until 11:00 AM at the funeral home. Burial will follow beside her late husband in the Doe Run Baptist Church Cemetery in Ararat, VA.
