Ms. Velma Mays Humphreys, 84, of Mount Airy, NC, passed away early Tuesday morning, October 24, 2017, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, NC. Ms. Humphreys was born November 20, 1932, in Nelson County, VA, one of six children born to the late John Wortham and Lillie Ivetta Allen Mays. Velma worked as a cashier at Walmart for several years and was a member of Blues Grove Baptist Church. She is survived by two daughters, Doana Humphreys and Velma Watts, both of Mount Airy, NC; four sons and daughters-in-law, Norman and Angie Humphreys and John and Ginny Humphreys, all of Raphine, VA, Thomas and Sherin Humphreys of Craigsville, VA, and Frank and Carol Humphreys of Stuarts Draft, VA; a foster daughter, Noi Bland of Raleigh, NC; seven grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several great-stepgrandchildren; two sisters, Bessie Hughes of Richmond, VA, and Viola Humphreys of Montebello, VA; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Ms. Humphreys was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Humphreys; a son, James Humphreys; a son-in-law, Franklin Richard Watts; three brothers, William Mays, Gene Mays, and John Mays; and the father of her children, Norman L. “Buck” Humphreys. A memorial visitation will be held Thursday, October 26, 2017, from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Blues Grove Baptist Church in Mount Airy, NC. A graveside service will be held Friday, October 27, 2017, at 2:00 PM at West Augusta Community Cemetery in West Augusta, VA. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, especially Lisa, Janene, Anita, Rhonda, Joe, and Kim, who walked the five-year journey with Velma. Also, the family is grateful for the love and compassion of Velma’s beloved friends, Jennifer Cann and Debbie Davis. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or The Gideons International, Memorial Bible Program, P.O. Box 1032, Mount Airy, NC 27030. The family is being served by Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, NC, and Henry Funeral Home in Staunton, VA.
