Velma Parnell

Mrs. Velma Sykes Jarrell Parnell, age 92, of Durham, passed away on Saturday, December, 8, 2018 at Treyburn Nursing Home in Durham.  She was born April 29, 1926 to the late Guy Duncan and Bertie Alma Mosley Sykes.  Mrs. Parnell was a retired data processor from First Union Bank of Charlotte and was a member of Rose of Sharon Church in Durham.  Left to cherish her memories are her husband, Vernon Parnell of the home; daughter Nancy (Charlie) Lewis; son Steve Jarrell (Courtney King); step daughters, Judy Roach (Rodger), Cindy Johnson (Wayne); step sons, V. Ray Parnell Jr. (Debbie), Mark Parnell (Treva), Mike Parnell (Janice) and grandchildren, Brandon Gayle (Amanda), Christy Bishop (Mike), Steven Jarrell (Tracie), Madison Cooley (Clinton), Michael Lewis (Stacey), Heather Morris (Brent).  She leaves 12 great grandchildren and a host of step grandchildren and step great grandchildren.  She also leaves a sister, Allene Martin of Kansas City, MO.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. Parnell was preceded in death by her first husband, Leslie Jarrell and a daughter Maria Gayle.  A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at 2:00 PM at Skyline Memory Gardens in Mount Airy, NC with services conducted by Rev. Jeff McCarthy.  The family will receive friends from 12:30 until time to leave for the service at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy.  Prior to this service there will be a memorial service held in her honor on Dec. 17, 2018 at 11:00 AM with visitation one hour prior to the service at Rose of Sharon Baptist Church on 4109 Guess Rd. in Durham NC with services conducted by Rev. Jeff McCarthy and Rev. Mark Parnell.
