Mrs. Vera Nancy Stevens Hiatt, 82, formerly of 2806 Westfield Road, Mount Airy, passed away Wednesday, October 10, 2007, at Village Care in King. Mrs. Hiatt was born November 17, 1924, in Surry County, to the late William Raymond "Ray" and Susan Etta Hiatt Stevens. She married Arlyss Edmond Hiatt in December 1945, and they enjoyed 54 years of marriage before his death in 1999. Vera retired as a cafeteria worker from the Mount Airy City Schools and was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Cleon Gammons of Mount Airy; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tony and Ricki Hiatt of Raleigh and Douglas and Rhoda Hiatt of King; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mildred Stevens Hall and Christine Stevens Hunter, both of Mount Airy; a brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Mary Laura Stevens of Mount Airy; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Hiatt was preceded in death by two sons, Steven Dale Hiatt and James Todd Hiatt; a sister, Cleo Stevens; and a brother, James Raymond Stevens. The funeral service will be held Saturday, October 13, 2007, at 11:00 AM at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The service will be conducted by Bishop David P. Hiatt, and burial will follow in the Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Friday from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
