Vera Mae Collins Spurlin

Mrs. Vera Mae Collins Spurlin, 78, of 141 Holder Road, Mount Airy, passed away Sunday, March 4, 2007, at her home. Mrs. Spurlin was born May 25, 1928, in Surry County, to the late Wyley Houston and Gracie Adams Lowe Collins. She was a homemaker, retired from Ballston Knitting Company, and a member of Bible Baptist Church in Lowgap. Vera was a beautiful and wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Leonard Curtis "Shorty" Spurlin of the home; a daughter, Jerry Blue Johnson of Mount Airy; a son and daughter-in-law, Terril Lee and Monica Spurlin of Mount Airy; a stepdaughter and spouse, Mary and Miles Collins of Winston-Salem; a stepson, Gene Andrew Spurlin of Bacliff, TX; three grandchildren, Jessica Johnson of Chicago, IL, and Shena Spurlin and Haley Spurlin, both of Mount Airy; a stepgrandson, Jeffrey Collins of Winston-Salem; a sister, Gracie Veo Collins Amos of Mount Airy; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Margaret Oswalt of Louisville, KY, and James and Gelene McKnight of Lowgap. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Spurlin was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Virginia Collins Rose; and two brothers, James Adam Collins and Wyley Claron Collins. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 7, 2007, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Robert Farmer, the Rev. Woodrow Flippen, and the Rev. Blaine Oakley. Burial will follow in the Holly Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Lambsburg, VA. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. In lieu of flowers, memorials should be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, especially Libby Marion and Melissa Reynolds, for their love, care, and support during Vera's illness.
