Mrs. Vergie Laster Melton Cockerham, age 90, of Elkin, passed away on Sunday March 25, 2007 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. She was born in Surry County on September 2, 1916 to the late Houston Laster and Mary Butcher Laster. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Cockerham was preceded in death by two husbands, Coley Melton and Ervie Cockerham; a daughter, Kay Melton Durham; two stepsons, James and Avery Cockerham; three sisters Emma Holyfield, Onia Lawerence and Nervia Melton; two brothers, Avery and Harvey Laster. Mrs. Cockerham was a homemaker and was the oldest member of Gum Orchard Baptist Church. Surviving are a daughter and two sons-in-law, Wanda and Ralph Hanes of Winston Salem and Charles Durham of Elkin; a son and daughter-in-law, Rex and Judy Melton of Elkin; two stepdaughters and spouses, Marie and Posey Steel of Elkin, Nancy and Turk Teague also of Elkin; five grandchildren, Michael Hanes and wife Tammie, Donna Hanes, Chip Durham and wife Becky, Tanya Reaves and husband Gary, and Dana Mason and husband Robert; nine great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; several step great- grandchildren; a brother Marvin Laster of Elkin; two special nieces Linda Martin and Barbara Luffman. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 Wednesday March 28, 2007 at Gum Orchard Baptist Church with Rev. Ron Chamblin and Rev. James Hobernicht officiating. Burial will follow in the Zephyr Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Moody-Davis Funeral Home on Tuesday evening from 7 until 9 PM where her body will remain until time to be taken to the church to lie- in- state thirty minutes prior to the funeral service.
