Rev. Verlon Ray Combs, 78, of Cana, VA, went to his heavenly home Tuesday, April 5, 2022. He was born in Carroll County, February 4, 1944, to the late Demps and Lucy Cagle Combs. Verlon bravely served in the U.S. Army from 1965 – 1967. He announced his call to preach in 1984 and pastored Slate Mountain Baptist from 1986 until 1999 and Lambsburg Baptist Church 2000 until 2009. Verlon was dedicated to spreading God’s word and taught his children and grandchildren the importance of always putting God first in their lives. He is survived by his daughters, Pam Bowman and husband, G.W., and Anesia Bridges; grandsons, Andrew Bowman and wife Felecia, Luke Bowman and wife Greshma; great grandchildren, Kalvin George Bowman, and Mathew Ray Bowman; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Verlon was preceded in death by his wife Hazel King Combs; son-in-law, Chuck Bridges; sisters, Ima Newman, Ilva Vass, Elza Jones, Lessie Leonard, and Joyce King; brother Marvin Combs, and an infant brother Wade. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, April 9, 2022, at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy with his grandsons Rev. Andrew Bowman and Luke Bowman officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 9:30 AM until the time of the service. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens.
