Mrs. Vernie Arlene Simpson Johnson, 96, of Mt. Airy, passed away at Surry Community Health and Rehab Center, Thursday, July 29, 2021. She was born in Surry County, August 29, 1924, to the late Colie McKinley and Mecie Emma Reynolds Simpson. Mrs. Johnson was well known throughout Surry and Stokes Counties for her beautiful floral arrangements. She owned and operated Mountain View Florist in Pilot Mountain for 35 years before retiring. She was a dedicated member of the Pilot Mountain VFW Women’s Auxiliary for many years. Mrs. Johnson and her late husband Roy Franklin Johnson generously volunteered their time at the VA Hospital in Salisbury as well as assisting with many activities sponsored by the women’s auxiliary and VFW. She was a faithful member of Pine Hill Church as long as her health permitted. Although Mrs. Johnson had no children of her own, she was very loving and generous to her siblings, nieces and nephews. Mrs. Johnson will be forever remembered by her sister Gaynell Culler, brother Robert Simpson; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her sisters and brothers-in-law, Estle and Paul Wilson, Audrey and Johnnie Wood, Bertie and Rev. Wayne DeHart, Mildred Wood and Dr. Leighton Culler; brothers and sisters-in-law, Rufus and Viola Simpson, Wayne Simpson, and Gilda Gray Simpson. Due to the Covid concerns, the family will be having a private service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pine Hill Church, c/o Johnny Bruner, 638 Eldora Rd., Ararat, NC 27007. Online condolences may be made at www.moodyfuneralservices.com.
