Mrs. Vertie Griffith Cook, passed away at the home of her daughter, Sunday, October 28, 2007. Mrs. Cook was born in Surry County April 8, 1911 to the late Sara Frances "Sallie" Taylor and John Dee Griffith. She had been a resident of Mt. Airy all her life and was retired from Spencer's where she worked for 40 years. She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Mt. Airy. She enjoyed many hobbies such as gardening, canning and reading. Surviving are one daughter, Sara Cook Throckmorton and husband Jeff Throckmorton of Pilot Mtn; grandsons Douglas Taylor and wife Jennifer of Pilot Mtn and Jody Taylor and wife Stephanie of Pilot Mtn; two nieces, Hazel McCraw and husband Paul of Mt. Airy, Lorraine Gilley widow of Earlie Gilley of Pilot Mtn; two nephews, Arnold Griffith and wife Mary Jane of Mt. Airy, Andy Griffith and wife Cindi of Manteo, NC. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Cook was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Bernie Cook, four brothers, Will, Carl, Edgar, and Conce Griffith; two sisters, Deanna Coleman and Jennie Beasley; one nephew, Charles William "Billy" Coleman. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, October 30, 2007 at 2:00 PM at Fellowship Baptist Church by Rev. Milton Sewell and Dr. Victor Lyons. Her body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 7:00 until 9:00 PM at Fellowship Baptist Church in Mt. Airy and at other times at the home of her daughter in Pilot Mtn. Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy is assisting the Cook family.
