Mr. Victor G. Pyles, Sr., 86, of Mount Airy, passed away Sunday evening, November 23, 2008, at his home. Mr. Pyles was born May 16, 1922, in Giles County, VA, son of the late Wesley G. and Perlina Higgs Pyles. Victor served our country in the United States Marine Corps during World War II, initial beach landing on Iwo Jima. He retired from Pruitt Construction Company after many years of service. Mr. Pyles had been an active member of Flat Rock Pentecostal Holiness Church since 1951. He served his church in many capacities, including Deacon, Choir Director, Sunday School Teacher of the Young Men's Class and Men's Bible Class, and instrumental in the construction of the new church building in 1967 and 1968. Victor sang gospel music in churches for more than 55 years and had a local rest home ministry for the last 10 years. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Pauline Pruitt Pyles of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Pete and Jackie Pyles of Tobaccoville and the Rev. Vic and Kathleen Pyles of Winston-Salem.; four grandchildren and their spouses, Angie and Gregg Comer of Pfafftown, Dean and Heather Pyles of Galax, VA, Dana and Chris Davis of Clemmons, and Kevin and Derina Pyles of Winston-Salem; ten great-grandchildren, Alex, Hylea, Chelsea, Whittany, Gracie, Noah, Cole, Kage, Kaleah, and Carmen several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special dog, Tinkerbelle. In addition to his parents, Mr. Pyles was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Dean Pyles, Sr.; three sisters, Mary Pyles, Macie Pyles, and Violet Pyles; and five brothers, William Pyles, Tom Pyles, Roy Pyles, Hasten Pyles, and Lawrence Pyles. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, November 26, 2008, at 11:00 AM at Flat Rock Pentecostal Holiness Church, with Dr. David Sparks, the Rev. Vic Pyles, Jr., Pete Pyles, and the Rev. Tim Gammons officiating. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery, with military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 5:30 to 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where his body will remain until carried to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes before the funeral service. The family would like to express their love and appreciation to the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care and their many friends and neighbors for the loving and compassionate care given to Victor during his illness. Prior to his death, Victor requested all former gospel singing associates serve as honorary pallbearers at his funeral service.
