Mrs. Viola Hardy Nixon, 95, widow of Mr. Thomas Edward Nixon, of Dobson, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, March 5, 2009, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born in Surry County on October 15, 1913, to the late Edward and Hughsie Fulk Hardy. Mrs. Nixon was a homemaker and a dedicated member of Salem Baptist Church, where she was able to attend through her 94th birthday. Mrs. Nixon was the oldest member of Salem Baptist Church. She leaves to cherish her memory her loving daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Billy Whitaker of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren and their spouses, Keith Gray and Temple Whitaker of Newtown, Conn., and Tammy Lynn and Rob Schaffernoth of Atlanta, GA; six great- grandchildren, Cory, Kelsey, and Katelyn Schaffernoth, and Kathleen, Gracie and Paul Whitaker; a sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Frank Slaydon of Cary; and two sisters-in-law, Betty Hardy and Jean Hardy, both of Dobson. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Nixon was preceded in death by five sisters, Lillian Haymore, Mary Stanley, Ella Nixon, Pearl Wilmoth, and Geneva White; and two brothers, Elbert Hardy and Richard Hardy. A celebration of her life will be held at 6:00 pm Saturday, March 7, 2009, at Salem Baptist Church, where her body will lie-in-state thirty minutes prior to the service, by Rev. Bobby Lewis and Rev. Christa M. Warise. The family will receive friends in the church foyer following the service. A family graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday, March 8, 2009, at Salem Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Salem Baptist Church Building Fund, 430 Rockford Road, Dobson, NC 27017. Moody-Davis Funeral Home is serving the Nixon family.
