Mr. Virgil Franklin Phillips, 85, of 375 Magnolia Lane, Cana, VA, passed away Tuesday morning, January 13, 2009, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mr. Phillips was born January 1, 1924, in Carroll County, VA, to the late Alex and Lucinda Sechrist Phillips. He served our country in the United States Army during World War II and was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2019 in Mount Airy. Virgil retired from Bassett Furniture after many years of service and was a member of FireHouse Ministries. He is survived by four sisters and a brother-in-law, Magdalene Sutphin, Leola McMillian, and Brenda Walden, all of Mount Airy, and Beatrice and Matthew Ferguson of Rural Hall; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Arlis and Mary Lee Phillips of Cana, VA, and Glenwood and Lucille Phillips of Mount Airy; a special nephew/caregiver and his family, Bobby, Jeanette, and Acacia Phillips of Mount Airy; twelve other nieces and nephews; and a host of great nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Phillips was preceded in death by a brother, Bernard Phillips. The funeral service will be held Thursday, January 15, 2009, at 2:00 PM at FireHouse Ministries, with Pastor Larry Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery in Cana, VA, with military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, and other times at the home of Brenda Walden, 302 Laila Lane, Mount Airy. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions can be made to FireHouse Ministries, 840 Fowler Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030, or to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, c/o Thurmond Midkiff, 1056 North Main Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
