Mrs. Virginia Lee Perry Kallam, 77, of Mount Airy, passed away Monday morning, October 3, 2016, at her home. Mrs. Kallam was born October 2, 1939, in Watauga County, one of seven children born to the late Tom and Stella Isaac Perry. Virginia was reared in Vilas and graduated from Catawba College and Wingate University. After she married Lemuel Wallace Kallam in 1966, she and Wallace made their home in the White Plains community of Surry County. Virginia retired as a social worker from Surry County Department of Social Services after 25 years of service. Mrs. Kallam was a dedicated Christian and a member of Dover Baptist Church. She was interested in all the church’s activities and programs, serving as a Sunday school teacher, choir member, Acteens leader, financial clerk, and church clerk for 40 years. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Connie and Gary Griffith and Tammy Shoemaker and Terry Griffith, all of Mount Airy; her grandchildren, Craig Smith of the home, and Gabrielle Griffith and Corey Hilton, Austin Griffith, Brett Barneycastle, and Stephen Shoemaker, all of Mount Airy; two sisters, RoseAnna Hayes of Mayodan and Judy South of Vilas; three brothers and a sister-in-law, Mickael and MaryAnn Perry and Ernest Perry, all of Vilas, and Harold Perry of Murfreesboro; the Kallam family, Kenny Kallam, Steve Kallam, and Norma Kallam, all of Mount Airy, Wanda and Bill Benbow of Lewisville, Larry and Sharon Kallam of Elkin, and Judy and Tim Gray of Fort Mill, SC; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Kallam was preceded in death by her husband, Lemuel Wallace Kallam; a brother and sister-in-law, J.W. and Margie Perry; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, William Allen and Lillian Simpson Kallam; and a sister-in-law and four brothers-in-law, Lou Nell and Charlie Wayne Hardy, Randall Simpson Kallam, the Rev. Elliott Hayes, and Dean South. A service of worship and celebration of Virginia’s life will be held Thursday, October 6, 2016, at 2:00 PM at Dover Baptist Church, with the Rev. Larry Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where her body will remain until carried to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes before the funeral service. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to Surry Christian Counseling Center, c/o Surry Baptist Association, 364 Welch Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love and compassion shown by the staff at Novant Health Oncology Specialists, especially Dr. Nick G. Chrysson, Michelle, Vonda, Donna, and Allison. Also, the family is grateful the care given by Pruitt Home Health and Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care.
