Virginia Ashburn Newman

Mrs. Virginia "Genny" Ashburn Newman, 88, of 2757 Red Brush Road, Mount Airy, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday morning, June 29, 2010, from the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mrs. Newman was born January 10, 1922, in Surry County, daughter of the late George Washington and Hallie Elizabeth Hardy Ashburn. She worked at Renfro Corporation for 29 years and was a member of Community Baptist Church. She is survived by a son, Jimmy Ray Newman and Carolyn of Mount Airy; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Judy and Delmer McCraw, Sandra Newman, and Rhonda and David Collins, all of Mount Airy; ten grandchildren, Pat Largen, Bonita Harrison, Lisa Brooks, Charlie Newman, Mike McCraw, Jamie Simons, Chris Simons, Jody Collins, Cody Collins, and Rocky Collins; twelve great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Mary Nell King of Charlotte and Elsie Simpson of Mount Airy; two brothers-in-law, Troy Newman and Garnett Newman, both of Mount Airy; several nieces and nephews; a special family member, Mary Beall; and special caregivers, Freeda Pond, Peggy Vernon, Claudine Blaire, Judy Flinchum, and Brandi. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Newman was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Clifford Newman; four sisters, Eleckal Watts, Ruth Johnson, Lillie Haywood, and Ruby Golden; and two brothers, Garland Ashburn and Clarence Ashburn. The funeral service will be held Thursday, July 1, 2010, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with Dr. Craig Edwards and the Rev. Sammy Lawson officiating. Burial will follow in the Community Baptist Church Cemetery. There will not be a formal visitation; however, her body will lie-in-state at the funeral home prior to the funeral service so family and friends may pay their respects. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the Newman family.
