Virginia Vanlee "Jennie" Surratt Slate

Mrs. Virginia Vanlee "Jennie" Surratt Slate, 80, of Claudville, VA, passed away Tuesday, June 10, 2008. Mrs. Slate was born January 7, 1928, in Surry County, to Swanson and Viola Renner Surratt. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister. Jennie was a true friend to so many and was always willing to help anyone in need. Mrs. Slate was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Johnny Marion of Claudville, VA; two sons and daughters-in-law, the Rev. Rick and Karin Slate of Gastonia and Leslie and Amy Slate of Mount Airy; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Mary Ruth and Woodrow Beamer and Helen Sawyers, all of Mount Airy; and a brother, Swanson Surratt, Jr. of Mount Airy. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Slate was preceded in death by her loving husband, Burton Merritt Slate; and two sisters, Pauline Surratt and Geraldine Surratt. The funeral service will be held Friday, June 13, 2008, at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Rick Slate, the Rev. Barry Clement, and Rev. Mark George. Burial will follow in Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Claudville, VA. The family will receive friends Thursday night from 6:00 to 8:00 at the funeral home.
