Virginia Dare Creed Vernon

Mrs. Virginia Dare Creed Vernon, 91, of Cana, VA, passed away Monday, May 25, 2009, at her home after a brief illness. Mrs. Vernon was born December 1, 1917, in Surry County, to the late James William and Jessie Watkins Creed. She married Harlie W. Vernon on June 14, 1947. She retired from J.C. Penney Company in 1980 after many years of service as the manager of the boys department. She was a member of Rockford Street United Methodist Church, and most recently she faithfully attended Oak Ridge Baptist Church in Cana, VA. Mrs. Vernon was the last surviving member of her generation. She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Vernon was preceded in death in July 1997 by her husband of 50 years, Harlie W. Vernon. Also, she was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Creed; and five brothers, James Creed, Clunette Creed, Edward Creed, Jess Creed, and Paul Creed. The funeral service will be held Thursday, May 28, 2009, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. David "Buster" Sechrist and Rev. Roland McCraw officiating. Interment will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday, May 28, 2009, from 1:00 PM until the time of the service at the funeral home.
