Retired Sheriff W. R. "Bill" Hall completed his journey to his Heavenly home on January 4, 2008 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center while surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Stokes County on November 30, 1929 to the late Powell and Ruby Bennett Hall. Mr. Hall was a proud member of the Republican Party and served twenty-eight years in law enforcement with sixteen years as Sheriff of Surry County. He was a veteran of the US Army having courageously served our country during the Korean War. As well as a lifelong farmer, Mr. Hall was a member of the Zephyr Ruritan Club and the Elkin VFW and touched many lives with his gentle smile and kind spirit. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife and soul mate of 54 years, Barbara Newman Hall of the home; a son and daughter-in-law. Jeff and Debra Hall of Elkin; two daughters and sons-in-law Pam Sell and Robert McMillian of Elkin and Melissa and Joseph Tucker of Ararat; two grandchildren Kristy and Tony Cox and Scott Hall and fiance Kathryn Jackson all of Elkin; two great-grandchildren Noah and Mason Cox of Elkin; two step grandchildren Jason McMillian and wife Chelsea of Dobson and Brandy Dapp of Jonesville; five sisters and four brothers-in-law Lois and S.M. Southard, Helen and C.L. White, Shirley and Rudy Southard, Carolyn Williams all of Elkin and Susie and O.D. Hayes of Tenn; three brothers and sisters-in-law J.R and Francis Hall, Gray and Senia Hall, Wallace and Sonia Hall all of Elkin. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hall was preceded in death an infant son Brian Keith Hall and three brothers Richard, Jackie and Lonnie Hall. Funeral service will be held at 2 pm Sunday in the chapel of Moody-Davis Funeral Home with Dr. Carl Childs, Rev. Ron Chamblin and Rev. Joe Lambert officiating. Burial will follow in Zephyr Cemetery with Military Honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Honor Guard Mount Airy Post 2019, Pilot Mountain Post 9436 and Mr. Hall's Comrades of VFW Post 11222. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 pm Saturday at Moody-Davis Funeral Home. Special thanks to the many friends, neighbors and the Staff of WFUBMC Intensive Care Unit for all the love, prayers and every act of kindness shown to them during this difficult time.
