Mr. Wade Columbus Haynes, 82, of Mount Airy, passed away Thursday morning, February 29, 2024, at his home. Mr. Haynes was born October 9, 1941, in Surry County, one of eight children born to the late Thomas Martin and Mary Catherine “Cassie” Gates Haynes. Wade enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on August 4, 1961. He was stationed in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, during the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962, and was honorably discharged as a lance corporal on August 3, 1965. Wade worked at Kentucky Derby Hosiery for many years, and he later worked at Advanced Electronic Services Inc. Mr. Haynes attended Shining Light Baptist Church as long as his health permitted. He is survived by his wife of almost 61 years, Carol Reece Haynes; a daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Tim Creed; two grandsons, Zane Creed and his significant other, Amber Ashton, and Zachary Creed and his wife, Lauren; a great-grandson, Tyree Jackson Creed; a sister and brother-in-law, Lorraine and Douglas “Kornell” Hooker; a brother and sister-in-law, Glenn and Ginger Haynes; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Haynes was preceded in death by an infant sister, Diane Marie Haynes; two sisters, Nellie Taylor and Wanda Midkiff; and two brothers, Tommy Haynes and Joe “Rass” Haynes. The funeral service will be held Sunday, March 3, 2024, at 2:00 PM at Shining Light Baptist Church, with the Rev. Johnathan Bass officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, with military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Sunday from 1:00 until 2:00 PM at the church. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
