Walter Burton Dawson

Mr. Walter Burton Dawson, 96, of Ararat, VA, passed away Saturday morning, April 23, 2011, at his home, surrounded by his family. Mr. Dawson was born February 27, 1915, in Carroll County, VA, to the late Arthur and Minnie Branson Dawson. He was a retired orchardist. For many years, he worked with Levering's Orchard and also had orchards of his own. Mr. Dawson is survived by his wife, Julia Haynes Dawson of the home; a daughter, Carol Dawson of the home; a brother and sister-in-law, Glenn and Margie "Red" Dawson of Cana, VA; two sisters-in-law, Esther Dawson of Ararat, VA, and Eulala Dawson of Cana, VA; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Dawson was preceded in death by two sisters, Clinnie Belle Dawson and Hassie Haynes; and three brothers, Garnet Dawson, Luke Dawson, and Eugene Dawson. The funeral service will be held Monday, April 25, 2011, at 2:00 PM at Oak Grove Baptist Church, with Joey Haynes officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 1:00 until 2:00 PM at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to David Dawson, 3195 Wards Gap Road, Cana, VA 24317 for an evergreen tree fund in memory of Mr. Dawson. Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy is serving the Dawson family.
