Walter "Wayne" Edmonds

Walter “Wayne” Edmonds, 85, of Dobson, North Carolina passed away peacefully on March 28, 2025. Born March 13, 1940, to the late Walter Brady and Novella Hamlin Edmonds in Surry County, North Carolina. Wayne was a pillar in the community. His passion for coaching, mentoring and supporting the youth of Surry County (and beyond) will be his everlasting legacy. His commitment to youth sports began in 1963 when he (along with others) helped establish Little League Baseball in Dobson. He earned countless awards, received national and local honors, including USA Baseball Golden Spikes National Volunteer Coach of the Year and induction into the 2017 Class of the Surry County Sports Ring of Honor. Ever the champion, Wayne was always front and center cheering on his beloved Surry Central Eagles and Surry Community College Knights – no matter the sport. A lifelong fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Wayne established many friendships with team members throughout the years. He spent countless hours watching, and travelling to watch, his favorite team, including the 1981 World Series at Yankee Stadium with his sons, Jeff, Joel and Josh. Wayne’s passion was not limited to sports. He truly loved his animals, especially his fur babies Charlie and Honey Bear. He had an innate ability for horsemanship and when not at a ball field, could be found in the ring, patiently training horses and teaching others the art of equestrianism. Above all, his faith in God, love for his wife and sons, grandkids, family and friends were his absolute joys in life. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Kathryn White Edmonds; sons and daughters-in-law, Jeffrey Wayne Edmonds and Deanna (Poindexter), Joel Grant Edmonds, and Josh Hamlin Edmonds and Nicole (Caparella); special family member, Timmy Sawyers; grandchildren, Callie Gentry Edmonds, Brady Joseph Edmonds, and Jacob Dean Edmonds; sister, Rachel Edmonds Earnest; nieces and nephews, JoAnn and Tommy Greene, Jerry and JoAnn Mears, Susan Earnest Tolbert, Scott and Melissa Vernon, Tracy and Ryan Bullins, Benson White, and Maddie and Trevor Simmons; as well as numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sister, Vera Edmonds Mears; two infant sisters; and nephews, Kenneth Earnest and Johnny Mears. The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 5, 2025, from 12:00 until 2:00 PM at Fairview Baptist Church, 7659 NC-268, Dobson. A celebration of life will follow at 2:00 PM with Dr. Billy Nale, Dr. Dan Merritt, and Rev. Kevin Harris officiating. Please join us in honoring Wayne’s memory by wearing your favorite blue jeans, Carolina or Dodger blue shirts and cowboy boots (if you have them). The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Mountain Valley’s Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home for their kind and compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Mountain Valley’s Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home. Mountain Valley’s Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home 945 Zephyr Rd.
