Mr. Walter Harrelson “Doug” Smith, Jr., 69, of Pilot Mountain, lost his fight with cancer at his home on Monday, November 13, 2017, surrounded by his family. Doug graduated from Bartlett-Yancey High School and Elon University. His career included working at Burlington Industries and Piedmont Airlines/US Air, where he founded the Piedmont Airlines Jazz Orchestra. In 2000, he started Pilot Tours, a company he loved and enjoyed traveling with area students and teachers. Doug lived life to the fullest. He loved to travel, play golf, and attend any and all sporting events that involved his grandchildren, the loves of his life. Doug had a heart of gold and never met a stranger. He was a longstanding member of First United Methodist Church in Pilot Mountain. Doug was born December 20, 1947, in Guilford County, to the late Walter Harrelson Smith, Sr. and Eunice Morgan Smith Rieves. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Delores Smith Millikin. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Gail Hayden Smith of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kelly and Chad Motsinger and Amanda and Christopher Cook, all of Pilot Mountain; five grandchildren, Cooper Motsinger, Carter Motsinger, Kennedy Cook, Smith Cook, and Salem Cook, all of Pilot Mountain; a niece, Pamela McGinnis of Greensboro; two nephews, Patrick McGinnis of Houston, TX, and Robert Millikin of Greensboro; and a great nephew, Sean O’Neill of Greensboro. A celebration of his life will be held Wednesday, November 15, 2017, at 3:00 PM at First United Methodist Church in Pilot Mountain, with the Rev. Randy Perdue officiating. Burial will follow in the Pilot Mountain City Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 1:30 until 3:00 PM at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 696, Pilot Mountain, NC 27041; or Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
