Wayne Douglas Bennett, Sr.

Mr. Wayne Douglas Bennett, Sr., 80, of Mount Airy, passed away in the early morning hours of Tuesday, November 30, 2021, at Colonial Care Home. Mr. Bennett was born April 18, 1941, in Surry County, the son of the late Frank James and Nellie Lucinda Quesinberry Bennett. Wayne served our country in the United States Army between the Korean and Vietnam wars. He worked as a logger and truck driver for many years. Left to cherish his memory are two sons and daughters-in-law, the Rev. Wayne Douglas Bennett, Jr. and Robin Lynch Bennett of Pilot Mountain and Jerry Brian and Louisa Bennett of Mount Airy; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra Lee and Lewis Dalton of Mount Airy; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Bennett was preceded in death by his loving wife of 43 years, Nelda Gay Ayers Bennett; an infant sister, Hassie Pauline Bennett; two sisters, Irene Fay Jones and Doris Inez Atkins; and a brother, Billy Elmo Bennett. A graveside service will be held Friday, December 3, 2021, at 12:00 PM at Westfield Friends Meeting Cemetery, with the Rev. Wayne Douglas Bennett, Jr. and the Rev. Jack Anderson officiating. The service will conclude with military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will greet friends Friday from 11:00 AM until 12:00 PM at the cemetery. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love and compassion shown by the staff and residents at Colonial Care Home, especially Sandy, who loved and cared for Wayne in a special way and for being by his side when he passed. Also, the family is grateful to the staff at Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care for their loving care. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030. Prior to his death, Wayne expressed his heartfelt desire in meeting his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
