Wayne Mills Cooke

Mr. Wayne Mills Cooke, 68, of Claudville, VA, formerly of Mount Airy, passed away Friday, March 12, 2010, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mr. Cooke was born October 1, 1941, in Patrick County, VA, to the late Harvey Wayne and Francis Ilene Mills Cooke. He attended Madison College. As a young man, Mr. Cooke coached Little League Baseball in the Franklin Community and was scout master at Calvary Baptist Church. He retired as a bridge supervisor and inspector from North Carolina Department of Transportation. He attended Asbury Presbyterian Church. He loved Western Bluegrass Music, and he was a member and caller for the Mount Airy Western Square Dance Club. He was a charter member of Blue Ridge Campers and Hikers Association. He served as an officer on local, state and national levels, including chairman of the Scholarship Fund for National Campers Association. Mr. Cooke was active with the ruritans and served two terms as president with the Franklin Ruritan Club. He is survived by the mother of his children, Brenda S. Cooke of Mount Airy; two daughters and sons-in-law, Christi and Tim Calhoun and Lori and Danny Creed, all of Mount Airy; grandchildren, Cody Calhoun, Garret Calhoun, Emily Calhoun, and Maddie Creed, all of Mount Airy; a sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Wendell Radford of Claudville, VA; and his companion, Maxine Smith of Ararat, VA. In addition to his parents, Mr. Cooke was preceded in death by a sister, Glenda Gaye Cooke. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Terry Collins and the Rev. Norman Biggs officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Monday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
