Mr. Wayne Rakes, 81, of Mount Airy, passed away Saturday, March 8, 2008, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. Rakes was born January 31, 1927, in Surry County, to Larkin Edward and Beatrice DePalma Rakes. He served our country in the United States Army. Not only was Mr. Rakes the owner-operator of Mount Airy Engraving and Sand Blasting, he was also well known for being the owner-operator of Mount Airy Roller Rink for many years. Surviving are his loving wife of 60 years, Virginia Marshall Rakes of the home; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Jeannie and Billy Morton, Donna and Buck Berrier, Waynette Rakes, and Darlene Love, all of Mount Airy; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Margaret Rakes of Pilot Mountain and Chris Rakes of Mount Airy; twelve grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Betty Jean and James Smith, Wanda and Billy Allen, and Ruth Francis, all of Mount Airy; a special nephew, Edward Rakes; a special niece, Mary Ann Carter; a sister-in-law, Lois Carter of Mt. Airy; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Lloyd and Betty Marshall of Gastonia; and his special pet, Peanut. In addition to his parents, Mr. Rakes was preceded in death by three brothers, Douglas Rakes, Sonny Rakes, and Warren Rakes; and two sisters, Lucille R. Hudson and Sandra R. Lineberry. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Dale Wallace and the Rev. Steve Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Midkiff Cemetery, with military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard Post 2019 of Mount Airy and Post 9436 of Pilot Mountain. The family will receive friends Monday night from 7:00 to 9:00 at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Joy Ranch Children's Home.
