Mr. Wayne Nichols Simmons, 85, of Mount Airy, passed away Sunday, October 17, 2010, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mr. Simmons was born December 22, 1924, in Surry County, to the late James Dewey and Huldah Susan Nichols Simmons. He served in the United States Army during World War II. Mr. Simmons was a tobacco farmer for many years and was well known for the strawberries he grew. He was a member of White Plains Friends Meeting. Mr. Simmons is survived by his wife of 60 years, Virginia Wall Simmons of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Rick Williams of Mount Airy; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Cathy Simmons of Mount Airy; four grandchildren and their spouses, Travis and Angie Marshall, Jennifer and Eric Aparicio, Tyler Simmons, and Jonathan Simmons; a stepgranddaughter, Kandice Williams; three great-grandchildren, Jordan Aparicio, Isabella Aparicio, and Boone Aparicio; five sisters and three brothers-in-law, Madge and Jack York and Imogene and Arnold Radford, all of Mount Airy, Hilda Harbour of Dobson, and Frances and Lewis Peacock and Barbara Cruise, all of Kernersville; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Eugene and Betty Simmons and Dr. Dean and Carole Simmons, all of Mount Airy. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, October 20, 2010, at 2:00 PM at White Plains Friends Meeting, with the Rev. Jake Penley and the Rev. Todd E. Byrd officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, with military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where his body will remain until carried to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes prior to the funeral service.
