Mr. Wiley Harold “Jack” McKinney, 89 of Toast passed away Tuesday, January 19, at Surry Community Health and Rehab. Mr. McKinney was born in the Round Peak section of Surry County May 10, 1931 to the late Eli Grover “E.G.” McKinney and Elizabeth Loucinda “Cindy” Payne McKinney. Mr. McKinney proudly served his country in the United States Army in the Korean War. He was of the Primitive Baptist faith, and enjoyed going to church as long as his health permitted. Jack will be remembered as a humble man, who cared for and looked after his parents and brothers and sisters, and will be truly missed. He enjoyed tinkering with anything mechanical, loved bluegrass and old time music, and playing his harmonica. Left to cherish his memories are nieces Sylvia Lowry of Mount Airy and Susan Frye of Winston Salem, nephew Leonard Speaks, and two special great nieces and their families, Jennie Lowry of Mount Airy and Briana Koons of Virginia Beach, VA. In addition to his parents Mr. McKinney was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters and their spouses, Curtis “Byron” and Doris McKinney, Boyd H. McKinney, Dorothy “Madeline” McKinney and James Lowry, Dora “Margaret” McKinney and Ralph Speaks, and Elizabeth “Carol” McKinney Johnson, as well as a special friend Louella Doby. A funeral service will be held Monday, January 25, at 11am, at Round Peak Primitive Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Elder Carlton Brown, Elder Lowell Hopkins, and Elder Ivan Payne will conduct the service. There will not be a formal visitation at the funeral home. Moody Funeral Services of Mount Airy is serving the family. The family wishes to thank the staff at Surry Community as well as Mountain Valley Hospice for their caring service. In lieu of flowers or making a donation, the family requests that those who knew Jack reach out to a loved one or friend in a nursing facility during this time of isolation. Moody Funeral Services of Mount Airy is serving the family.
