Wilford Junior "Bill" Sumner

Mr. Wilford Junior “Bill” Sumner, 88, of Mount Airy, passed away Wednesday afternoon, August 25, 2021, at his home. Mr. Sumner was born October 23, 1932, in Surry County, the son of the late Wilford and Cora Thomas Sumner. Bill served our country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He retired as a carpenter and subcontractor from Town and Country Builders after many years of service. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Georgia Simpson Sumner of the home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Terry Sumner of Mount Airy and Mary and Darrell Danley of Mount Airy; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Billy Gray and Kimberly Sumner of Mount Airy, Rickie and Janet Sumner of Ararat, VA, Jerry and Kathy Sumner of Ararat, NC, and Bobby Sumner of Mount Airy; sixteen grandchildren, Kevin Sumner, Donna Stanley, Tabatha Casstevens, Teirraha Lowe, Deanna Dickens, Zack Deel, Richard Sumner, Ronnie Sumner, Jordan Sumner, Ashley Gregory, Heather Thompson, Michael Davis, Jr., Taran Beshers, Hunter Danley, Cory Sumner, and Courtney Hill; several great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Harvey Leroy Sumner of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Sumner was preceded in death by a son, Billy Wayne Sumner; along with several brothers and sisters. The funeral service will be held Sunday, August 29, 2021, at 4:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Arlis Thomas and the Rev. Larry E. Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery, with full military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2:30 until 4:00 PM at the funeral home.
