Mr. William Maynard Beamer passed away Monday September 17. He was born in Mt. Airy October 9, 1918 to Dorsey Cullen Beamer and Martha Victoria (Mattie) Beamer. Mr. Beamer is survived by His wife of sixty years Christine Webb Beamer, a son William M. Beamer, Jr. and wife Caroline Beamer, two daughters, Judy Beamer Smith and her husband, Tom Smith, and Betsy Beamer Reeves and her husband, Paul Reeves. Mr. Beamer is also survived by his grandchildren, Nicholas Reeves, Christine Beamer, Alec Reeves, Stephen Smith, Meredith Smith and Ike Reeves. Mr. Beamer is also survived by brothers, Dorcey C. Beamer, Jr., Richard A. Beamer, and Bobby Beamer and sisters, Mary Nell Wynne and Ann Adams and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Beamer was a graduate of Mount Airy High School and National Business College. He served in the US Navy during World War II. He was a retired executive with Quality Mills/Cross Creek Apparel. He served the City of Mount Airy as City Commissioner for sixteen years and as Mayor for twenty four years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church. He was a former Scout and Scoutmaster. Mr. Beamer was a member of the American Legion for sixty years and served as commander of the Mount Airy American Legion Post. He served in numerous other civic and government capacities. Visitation will be at the First Baptist Church from 2:00 to 3:00 PM Thursday September 20, 2007 with a memorial service to follow at First Baptist Church at 3:00 PM. The service will be conducted by Dr. Roger Gilbert. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, Mount Airy Public Library or the Boy Scouts of America.
