William Harry Ellswood, Sr

William Harry Ellswood, Sr., M.D. of Mt. Airy, NC died May 7, 2007 at his home following a long illness. He was June 29, 1923 in Nanticoke, PA, the son of Harry and Eleanor Dykins Ellswood. He graduated from Nanticoke High School, attended Penn State University and City College of New York and received his MD degree from Tufts University in Boston, MA. Dr. Ellswood served his country in the US Army during World War II and the US Air Force during the Korean War. He continued in service with US Air Force, being stationed both in the United States and overseas, until 1961 when he entered private practice in Charleston, WV. Dr. Ellswood was a founding member of Associated Radiologists, Inc. and served as Chief of Radiology at the Charleston General division of the Charleston Area Medical Center for many years. He is fondly remembered for his charitable service to the Crippled Children's Division of CAMC and his support of the Charleston Ballet and Charleston Symphony Orchestra. While residing in Charleston, he was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Charleston. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Mt. Airy, NC at the time of his death. His lifelong hobbies included owning Tennessee Walking Horses and model trains and he was a member of the Mayberry Model Railroaders Club. Dr. Ellswood was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Evans Ellswood. He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-laws, Deborah and Steven Kight, Herndon, VA, and Terri and Ronald Mosley, Mt. Airy, NC: and his son, William H. Ellswood, Jr., Charlotte, NC. Dr. Ellswood is also survived by his grandchildren and spouse, Stephanie and Mike Draeger, Meredith and Allyson Kight, William Harry Ellswood, III and William Mosley; his step-grandchildren, Jeanette Baucom, Rhonda Mosley, Brad and Shannon Mosley, and five step-great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, May 9, 2007 at Central United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. John Ferree. Burial will follow in Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends 1:00 PM Wednesday until time of the service at the Central United Methodist Church Parlor. The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Roger Kerley, Libby Marion, Mike Fields, Jeff Tate, Rev. John Ferree and all the staff at Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care for their kindness during Dr. Ellswood's illness. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mt.
