William "Bill" DeLay Lamm

William “Bill” Lamm, 78, passed away Thursday afternoon December 22, 2016 surrounded by his family at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. Lamm was born in Surry County on April 18, 1938 to the late Lewis Marion Lamm and Gertrude DeLay Lamm. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and a Bachelor of Pharmacy from The University of North Carolina. Between degrees, he served in the United States Navy as the Communication Officer on board the USS Orleck (DD-886). During his time in the Navy, he was based out of Yokosuka, Japan and served in the South China Sea during the Vietnam War. He served the community of Mt. Airy for over forty years as a practicing pharmacist. He first worked at Lamm Drug Company, founded by his father in 1925, and later worked at Mayberry Pharmacy, Wallys Pharmacy and Gates Pharmacy. He found enjoyment in many things which included but not limited to HAM radio, music of many genres, black cats, and Tar Heel basketball. In addition to his parents, Mr. Lamm was preceded in death by his brother, Dr. James Louis DeLay Lamm. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Fultz Lamm of the home; his children, Dena Cook Moore and husband Shane of Winston Salem, Christopher DeLay Lamm and wife Dr. Meredith Coone Lamm of Asheville, and daughter, Anne DeLay Lamm Crump and husband Kyle of Norfolk, VA; grandchildren, Vincent DeLay Moore, Stelling Amelia Moore and Stratton Douglas Lamm. There will be a visitation at Trinity Episcopal Church in Mt. Airy on January 8, 2017 from 1:00 until 2:30 PM with a memorial service following. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to Trinity Episcopal Church, 472 N. Main St., Mt. Airy, NC 27030 or to Mt. Airy Regional Museum of History, 301 N. Main St., Mt. Airy, NC 27030.
