William Leon Matthews

Mr. William Leon Matthews, 74, of Mount Airy, passed away Sunday morning, December 19, 2010, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mr. Matthews was born June 7, 1936, in Surry County, to the late James Franklin and Ruth Leigh Dearmin Matthews. He retired as an automobile technician from Modern Chevrolet after 27 years of service and was a member of Salem United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Ann Beasley Matthews of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Ron Olsen of Wilmington; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Phillip and Elaina Matthews of Concord and Gregory Matthews of Mount Airy; five grandchildren, William Matthews and Lauren Matthews, both of Concord, and Skye Olsen, Nicholas Olsen, and Meadow Olsen, all of Wilmington; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Mary Agnes and Hubert Goins of Claudville, VA, Bonnie and Rick Harris of Lowgap, and Tommye Lou Puckett of Mount Airy; and a brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Lucille Matthews of Ararat, VA. In addition to his parents, Mr. Matthews was preceded in death by a sister, Faye Beasley; and a brother, Jimmy Matthews. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, December 21, 2010, at 2:00 PM at Salem United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dennis W. "Bud" Cameron and Dr. Steve Rainey officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where his body will remain until carried to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes before the funeral service.
