Mr. William Neil Thompson, 88, of Mount Airy, passed away Wednesday, October 28, 2009, at Village Care in King. Mr. Thompson was born July 3, 1921, in Englewood, CO, to Sylvaster and Laura Kellogg Thompson. He served our county in the United States Army during WWII. Mr. Thompson was a retired truck driver, retired from Motor Bearings and Parts in Greensboro, and also worked at Wal-Mart for seven years. Mr. Thompson was a very active member of Grace Moravian Church, where he was involved in the Men's Brotherhood. He was a member of the Lion's Club of Greensboro, where he received "The Lion of the Year Award" in 1975 and 1976. He was also an active member of the Lion's Clubs in Mount Airy for many years. Mr. Thompson was a member of Granite Masonic Lodge #322 AF & AM and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Surviving are a sister, Kate Cotter of Littleton, CO; a sister-in-law, Eulala Wolfe of Mount Airy; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Thompson was preceded in death by his wife, Macie Hiatt Thompson; three sisters, Helen Weekley, Marian Bohn, and Jean Rooch; and two brothers, Albert Thompson and Charles Thompson. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 PM Friday, October 30, 2009, at God's Acre, with the Rev. Tony Hayworth officiating. Memorials may be made to Grace Moravian Church, 1401 North Main Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030; the Margaret Leonard Scholarship Fund, c/o Grace Moravian Church, 1401 North Main Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or to a charity of the donor's choice.
