Mrs. Willie Sue Blackburn Shelton, 101, of Greensboro, passed away early Sunday morning, September 1, 2013, at Greenhaven Health and Rehabilitation Center in Greensboro. Mrs. Shelton was born July 28, 1912, in Surry County, one of seven children born to the late Roy Spurgeon and Nancy Inez Towe Blackburn. Sue worked as a knitter at Renfro Corporation for many years, prior to becoming a self-employed daycare provider at her residence near Mount Airy. In 1972, she became a part of Blackburn's Nursery, a family-owned daycare which was founded in the 1940s. While living in Mount Airy, Sue was a member and Sunday school teacher at Salem United Methodist Church for many years. After she moved to Greensboro in 1986, she became a member of First Evangelical Methodist Church. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, David George and Arista Snow Shelton of Greensboro; a granddaughter, Elaine Shelton Buckner of Greensboro; a grandson and his wife, David Randal "Randy" and Clara Shelton of Greensboro; two great-grandsons, Zachary Buckner and Nicholas Buckner, both of Greensboro; two sisters, Ernestine Blackburn Chappell and Janice Blackburn Newman, both of Mount Airy; a brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Elaine Blackburn of Charlotte; three sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Barbara and Glenn Macey and Ida Shelton, all of Mount Airy, and Esther Gearhart of Hampton, VA; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Shelton was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, George Woltz Shelton; three brothers, Garnett Blackburn, Guy Blackburn, and Glen Blackburn. The funeral service will be held Thursday, September 5, 2013, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Dennis W. "Bud" Cameron officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Thursday from 1:00 until 2:00 PM at the funeral home.
