Zelma Jane Sawyers Gunter

Mrs. Zelma Jane Sawyers Gunter, 99, of West Pine Street, Mount Airy, passed away Saturday morning, November 20, 2010, at Golden Living Center. Mrs. Gunter was born October 15, 1911, in Surry County, to the late Lum and Ila Hawks Sawyers. She was a retired custodian from Franklin Elementary School and a member of Amazing Grace Baptist Church. Surviving are three sons and five daughters-in-law, Lee and Donna Gunter of Shreveport, LA, Johnnie and Beverly Gunter of Mount Airy, Jerry and Libby Gunter of Huntersville, Karin Gunter of Stokesdale, and Linda Gunter of White Plains; fifteen grandchildren; thirty-four great-grandchildren; and four sisters and a brother-in-law, Betty and Lester Jones of Cana, VA, Medie Craig and Duna Wilson, both of Mount Airy, and Mary Lou Craig of Patrick Springs, VA. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gunter was preceded in death by her husband, James William Gunter; two sons, Bobby Gunter and Jimmy Gray Gunter; three sisters, Geneva Agee, Alene Andrews, and Margie Hawks; and a brother, Ray Sawyers. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, November 23, 2010, at 10:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Lonnie Gunter officiating. Burial will follow in the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
