Ziney Alzry Nunn

Mrs. Ziney Alzry Gammons Nunn, age 95, of Mount Airy, N.C. (Woodville community) entered into her heavenly home on Wednesday afternoon, May 22, 2019, at Forsyth Medical Center following several weeks of declining health.

She was the youngest of nine children and was born on June 8, 1923, in Surry County, N.C. to Joel and Mary Hiatt Gammons. She grew up in the Slate Mountain community and attended Flat Rock School.

She cherished her childhood memories of being raised in a Christian home and learned the values of faith and hard work. She learned from her mother how to cook and can on a wood burning cookstove. She learned to sew on an antique pedal sewing machine which became useful later in life as she made clothing for her children. She enjoyed making quilts and embroidering pillowcases. She studied her school books by the light of an oil lamp. Church for her as a child was an all day proposition. They would hitch up the mule and wagon, leave early on a Sunday morning and by the time they returned home, often they would hang a lantern on the side of the wagon to see how to get back home. She loved it when nieces and nephews were born into the family and loved them as if they were her own.

Alzry married Clarence Olin Nunn in November of 1942. They were blessed with 10 children. She worked in the fields to help provide for her family. She canned hundreds of cans of food each summer. At other times she stayed busy sewing clothing for her children and making quilts for her children and grandchildren. She was a wonderful cook. Her fried apple pies were out of this world. Holidays were always big occasions in cooking for the family. She would begin cooking 3 days before in preparation for these meals and how wonderful they were. She loved flowers and always made the yard beautiful. In her later years, she liked word search books and watching gospel and bluegrass music on tv.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Nunn was preceded in death by her husband Olin Nunn of 37 years, her son Kelly Nunn, daughter Mary Jane Tarry, and three precious grandchildren Vicky, Jeneanne, and Andy Nunn. She was also preceded in death by all her siblings Lizzie Draughn, Eva Hiatt, Versie Lambert Hiatt, Ralph Gammons, Adam Gammons, and 3 infant siblings.

Mrs. Nunn is survived by her children Saford Nunn and wife Pat, Roy Elvin Nunn and wife Sharon, Rhonda Pruitt and husband Willie, Vanise Bowman and husband Michael, Shirley George and husband Robert, R.D. Nunn and wife Brenda, Alden Nunn and special friend Tammy, Arnold Nunn and special friend April, a daughter-in-law Becky Nunn, 24 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. She also is survived by a sister-in-law Geraldine Nunn and brother-in-law Jim Adams and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2019, at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, N.C. and at other times at the family home. Funeral services will be held Sunday, May 26, at 2:00 p.m. at Woodville Baptist Church conducted by Pastor Kevin Kilby, Bro. Roy Elvin Nunn, and Bro. Ricky Easter. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
